Last Thursday we headed off to the west coast to meet up with three other couples that we do a “spring break” trip with every year (this tradition started last spring with a visit to Lexington). This years trip was focused around Napa, Sonoma, and of course, WINE!
We all flew into San Fransisco, spent the first day playing in the city, then piled in our cars early Friday morning to drive on out to wine country. The first stop on our itinerary, Silver Oak Winery.
Many of the wineries offer tastings and tours. Our friend had a contact here so we got a little more of a personalized tour which was a great way to kick off our weekend.
The hills roll with vineyards instead of green “bluegrass” and it is absolutely stunning (much like Kentucky).
The marine layer and I are not friends.
Even though I checked the weather numerous times…packed, unpacked and repacked…I did not expect how chilly the mornings were…usually lasting till 11 AM when the marine layer finally burned off and would let the sun shine through. I high recommend dressing in layers, especially if you will not be returning to your hotel during the day. Midday was perfect as the sun (and wine) warmed out souls and kissed our skin.
Silver Oak is very boutique in feel and they only produce two Cabernet, the Alexander Valley and the Napa Valley. Both are incredibly smooth, would be great for pairing with food and for drinking alone.
We were lucky enough to get to meet with Chef Dominic Orisini. We toured his beautiful garden, sampled strawberries straight from the vines, and sampled some of his perfectly cured meats. The winery does not have a restaurant but can be rented for private events (which can provide catered food from Chef Orisini).
With happy, wine filled bellies we loaded up and headed out to find a lunch spot.
I highly recommend adding Silver Oak to your itinerary. The cabernet here are pure perfection…and that says a lot from a girl who’s not keen on cabs…especially when I do not have food to pair them with.
