Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule Wardrobe

Those two words… Capsule Wardrobe. The start of simplifying life in 2016.

Scary. Exciting. Challenging.

Narrowing down my wardrobe is something I’ve wanted to do for a few years now and haven’t really given it the attention it deserves to make it work. How do we even end up with so many pieces of clothing that we don’t wear? I don’t know about you, but I buy because it’s “cute” or “on sale” not always because I love it or need it. There’s a high from the purchase and putting on that new item. I blame working in retail for years…where I practically bought a new item every day I worked…

Now to stop the madness.

Let’s start with: What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

The idea of a capsule wardrobe is to have a more simple, seasonal wardrobe. A wardrobe that is focused around 30-40 items including tops, bottoms, jackets, and shoes (depending on what you want to commit to…some do less like 20 items). I have decided with having to wear business casual clothing and regular clothing that 35-40 is a good number for me to help include work pants and dresses that I may not wear otherwise. I am also going to run my capsule seasons Dec-Feb, March-June, July-Sept, Oct-Dec. I know myself too well and by the time March rolls around I am not going to want to wear sweaters and will be suffering from some major spring fever. At the end of each season, you start working on your next season, evaluating what pieces from your current wardrobe you want to use and what you need (note I said need)…really buying pieces that are of quality, fit me well, and can be worn with lots of thing chosen in my capsule.

[ Note: I do have my suit and two tops set aside for when I need them for traveling but they will not be included in my “seasonal” attire since I only need it for certain occasions.  I am also not including coats (some people do but I only have 3 coats that I’ve worn for 3-4 years now so I don’t feel this is necessary area to simplify. ]

A great tool is the UnFancy blog. While she is currently on a break, her site really is everything you need to get started on a capsule wardrobe.

So what are my 35-40 pieces?

Sitting at 36 pieces, I may need to add in another pair of black work skinnies (for 4 full days of business casual) and I may trade out my graphic horse tee for a plain gray tee (or the navy tee…I can’t decide).  I also may trade out my denim jacket for another sweater but feel I may work through another full week of clothing before making that decision.

So far, these are the outfits I have put together for this week (4 days in). Stay tuned for more next week with 7 new (or repeated) outfits from my capsule and an update on how I’m doing!
